If you use the wrong app name it will come back with an error message that will provide you with valid app names, just watch the event log after you tell it to read the config file. So long story short, just put "xyz" in for the app name then save it and tell boinc to re-read the config file from the options menu and then open the event log.
BOINC client will recognise only those apps that you've downloaded at least once, and it will give error messages for perfectly valid names if it hasn't seen them before.
You can also extract the known names from your client_state.xml file in the BOINC data directory. Do not alter that file though! First make a copy, then fiddle with the copy.
